Nutrition Therapy coming to Health in Motion!

As of the first week of February, a new member will be joining Health in Motion in Ealing, Daniel O’Shaughnessy, who will be offering nutrition therapy every Thursday from 3-8pm. Read below for more information.

Nutritional Therapist

Daniel O’Shaughnessy was born into a family where good nutrition was at centre stage in the household so naturally Daniel’s love for good food began at an early age. His mother was a successful coach for a popular weight loss company and this really fuelled his interest in nutrition.

It was not until finishing university after studying a degree in Criminal Justice with Law that he decided to follow a career in addiction. Working as a therapist for over 6 years, Daniel assisted individuals recovering from drug and alcohol issues. After seeing the power of nutrition within the body and its impact on his clients, Daniel decided that this was his real passion and he went on to study Nutritional Therapy at the world-renowned Institute for Optimum Nutrition.

Daniel has received training in gastro-intestinal health problems, the nutritional management of energy imbalances, female hormone imbalances (including fertility, PMS, menopause), mood swings, dermatological (skin) health, immune health, and helping to address body composition and weight management needs.

Daniel is also the Communications Director for The British Association of Applied Nutrition and Nutritional Therapy. He brings to the role passion and enthusiasm, joining a fantastic team aiming to make Nutritional Therapy a primary healthcare option.

Daniel is a fully-qualified Nutritional Therapist, a full member of the British Association of Applied Nutrition and Nutritional Therapy, and is also registered with the Complementary and Natural Healthcare Council, the only register for Nutritional Therapy recognised by the Department of Health.

In Acupuncture terms, hayfever is seen as a signal that your energy is not flowing through your lymphatic system properly. Your immune system is either over reacting or your defence mechanisms are becoming inefficient. The traditional acupuncture approach to hayfever is to focus on the body’s response to an allergen, also the timing of the allergic response is a factor.  Acupuncture points are used to treat the bodies response to allergens. As a result of this the immune response should become more balanced.

Newsletter 2The idea of green smoothies didn’t appeal to me until I discovered I could obscure the taste with honey and ginger. The Kiwi is a great shot of Vit C and the Spinach provides your daily intake requirement of Iron. The Spinach is an Alkali forming food, so good at neutralising over acidic stomachs, and Ginger (allegedly) helps digestion. Not forgetting “an apple a day keeps the doctor away”, but then so does a chronically overstretched, underfunded NHS.

Good if you feel lethargic, indigestion or acid reflux.

January 2016 – #Achieve2016

I havlarge (25 of 42)e never felt under pressure to make goals for the new year.  It’s usually the “last straw” that spurs me on to make big changes in my life. However, I am going to put a stake in the ground this year and set me some objectives for 2016.

The main one will be get involved in speaking for interested groups about career change and embracing the inevitable roller coaster fuelled by passion and uncertainty. Accidentally, I have shared my story about how I transitioned from a career in Accountancy to Practitioner in Osteopathy and many people have taken inspiration from it.  However, to find the time and energy to take on this extra project, I have to set a few sub goals.

Health and Fitness are at the top (as for many other people I suppose). This is something I can do with my daughter now she is of an age where we can do sporty things together.  Also she is taking a keen interest in diet and gets involved in planning the menus at home.  That helps with another goal – spend more quality time with the little lady – she is growing fast and is about to embark on the transition from junior to senior school (ouch).

A third sub goal has to cover personal organisation.  I have a lovely team working across both clinics in Ealing and Maidenhead, so maybe now is the time to delegate more and free myself to pursue a new exciting project.  Below is a account of how we helped one of our patients #Achieve2015.

“When I came to see Lola in February I had been suffering with a debilitating knee issue for a few months. I had been to see a physiotherapist and a surgeon and I was told that I should not run again. I was recommended to see Lola at that stage. After a couple of visits I started to lightly run again and within 2 months I was back doing triathlons. I think the different approach Lola took to the treatment and the open mind that she looked at my injury with meant that she was able to determine the correct treatment for me where others had misdiagnosed and written me off.”

Poor breathing mechanics at the root of pain and poor sleep.

We helped Sarah, aged 40 with her upper back and neck pain which was stopping her from sleeping properly. It turned out it was being caused by a dysfunction of her breathing muscles.
She’d had a traumatic event occur in her life and since then had been holding herself in a protective and unnatural posture.
This led to a reduction in the efficiency of her diaphragm (the biggest breathing muscle) from functioning as it should and as a result the other breathing muscles located in her upper back and chest had to over work which led to her pain.
Using very gentle treatment we were able to restore more normal function of her diaphragm which helped reduce the burden on the other muscles. Within two sessions, Sarah’s sleeping pattern and discomfort had started to improve. Sarah was given some breathing exercises to do which helped to underpin the treatment.
What did I learn from this? 
I learnt that stress plays a huge role in musculoskeletal health and the importance of stress management is key to general wellbeing.


Tight deadlines are a pain in the neck… and jaw, and shoulders!

We helped Dianne, aged 50, who had been enduring progressive jaw, neck and shoulder pain for six weeks, and when atingling started in her 4th and 5th fingers, she decided to do something about it. At that time she had some work deadlines and was spending long periods sitting at a laptop.  After a little chat and examination, it became apparent that nerves were being irritated by a tightening of muscles in her neck and shoulder. After two treatments to improve muscle and joint mobility along the course of the affected nerve, Dianne was very pleased to report the tingling had stopped.

While talking during treatments, it came to light that the jaw pain could be related to a molar filling implanted four years previously. After some allergy testing, Dianne discovered she had an intolerance to Nickel. Her dentist replaced the filling with a different material and the jaw irritation eased.

Dianne would have been able to manage with the low grade Nickle irritation, the deadline stress or the postural muscle strain one at a time, but not all three together. Dianne decided to have regular six-weekly treatments to keep her upper back and neck mobile. She also follows some bespoke stretch exercises and good work station advice.

What did I learn from this case?

I need to keep an open mind to the many aspects of a person and the many things that could be contributing to their pain, and also to keep on looking and listening.

Sitting is the new Smoking

Are you sitting in front of a desk all day? Do you find yourself coming back from work with an aching lower back or neck?

In early 2015, a group of experts were invited to provide a set of guidelines to Public Health England, as a means of avoiding extended sedentary periods during work and leisure.

The basis for these recommendations was prompted by acquired amount of evidence over the past five years to show:

o   Links between sedentary living and diseases such as: Cardiovascular disease, Diabetes and some cancers

o   The introduction of sit-stand desk tops is believed to have had apparent benefits to weight control and prevention of musculoskeletal conditions.

o   There is an increase in the amount of fat deposition around essential organs such as the heart and kidneys.

o   Avoiding long periods of sitting frequent sessions of light movement improves levels of glucose and insulin.

o   Risk of disease reduces significantly when activity/fitness is increased

o   Compared with people who sit the least, those who sit the most have over twice the risk of developing Type 2 Diabetes and CV disease

o   Every additional hour of sitting per day is linked to a 10% higher risk of developing CV disease

In what ways are we increasing our risk?

  • Reduced periods of active human transport (ie: walking, running, cycling)
  • Increased sedentary behaviour at home (television, computer)

What can we do?

o   Aim to have at least 2 hours a day of standing and light activity (light walking) during working hours. This should eventually progress to 4h/day

o   Seated-base work should be regularly alternated with standing-based work

o   It is important to be aware that static standing is just as harmful to your health as static sitting

o   Individuals who are beginning the adaptation into the standing position may experience musculoskeletal sensations such as fatigue – sitting for a few minutes to alleviate these symptoms is recommended

Why is this necessary?

The idea is to loosen the tightness within soft tissues so as to improve performance and prevent injury. A variety of techniques can be used to do this; ranging from deep tissue work, Trigger Point therapy, Muscle Energy Technique and mobilisation of joints, to specific stretching and strengthening. It is a very helpful regular addition to a training programme, particularly if you are training for an endurance event, such as a half or full marathon.
